Tick Tock

Who knew I’d look so good as a time traveler?

For some reason, the Labor Day Weekend is one that almost never works out for me. Much like New Years, I look forward to it for weeks and then amCOMPLETELY disappointed when it actually gets here. I don’t know why this happens; it’s just part of my universe, I guess.

This year, however, was a pleasant surprise. I think the main reason it worked out so well is that I had absolutely no idea it was coming. My brain has been so full of other stuff that I had pretty much no idea that this weekend was anything other than THE SEASON 7 PREMIER OF DOCTOR WHO.

So, with my mind focused strictly on Science Fiction, I had completely forgotten that I had friends who were actually getting a long weekend. This means that two of my kick-butt lovely lady-friends were available to make my weekend totally awesome. One of them (let’s call her She-Ra) spent almost the entire weekend with me, while the other (and let’s call her Jem) came down Saturday night to join us for a nerd-tastic premier party. My parents were out of town this weekend, too, so we totally tore the place up. (Psssshhhhhhh.)

Oh, man, it was great. We ate fancy schmancy food that She-Ra brought from Trader Joe’s, and gorged ourselves on Pumpkin Chocolate Chip cookies that Jem brought. I swear, sparkly unicorns must shoot out of her fingers when she’s baking.

Charlie even happily played Play-Doh with us while we watched Daleks and beautiful eyebrow-less men frolic about on-screen

(Oh my gosh, you two. How did we not end up making Daleks out of Play-Doh!?)

Anyway, it was awesome. And that means that when everybody left and it was just Charlie and me, I definitely experienced some letdown. I’ve got one week before we head back to the big city, and I can see the hours beginning to slow waaaayyyy down.

I can’t believe it’s been over 2 months since this whole ordeal began, and we are this freaking close to having a home. A home in which we all live together. Where we will actually have an office to work from, a washer and dryer in our house that we don’t put coins into, and a routine (however elusive and mysterious it may seem right now) to fall into.

The clock is ticking, and it is dragging. I know that in the grand scheme of things, 12 days isn’t that big of a deal, but flippin-A, I’m ready to have a home. And I’m sure my parents are ready to have their home back.

Now, if I could only get my hands on a time-traveling blue box, I’d be all set

Apparently My Kid Does This a Lot

Well, not sitting in frying pans. That actually doesn’t happen as much as you think it would. I just wanted a cute lead-in picture.

I was going through pictures the other day, and discovered a recurring gesture from Charlie. Is he . . . conducting an imaginary orchestra? Chortling with grand sophistication at someone’s snappy wit? Either way, it’s cute.

BOOM!

Ohmygoshguysitfinally
happenedWEGOTAHOUSE!

Finally. Finally. The light at the end of the tunnel is not a mirage, and it’s not a lit cigarette butt. I can see the world outside and it looks miraculously like a 3 bedroom house with a fenced in backyard and a washer and dryer.

Sure, we’re just renting, but I’ve got a feeling that this is going to be Home. Perhaps, maybe, a home that we will live in for more than . . . gasp . . . a whole year!? Now that would be pretty awesome. We still probably won’t be back in the big city for another couple of weeks, but that’s not a big deal. It’s happening, it’s official, and I am so incredibly happy.

I’ve got plans, guys. Oh, I’ve got plans. These plans involve the reinstatement of a beloved weekly outing with a friend, cooking an enormous dinner for my aunt and uncle, many playdates for Charlie (and me), and the most EPIC KARAOKE REUNION EVER.

The other plans won’t be nearly as fun, but they will definitely be rewarding. Having a house means that we will have room. We won’t need to stuff our closets so full of crap that we don’t know where anything is anymore. With a good amount of work, we’ll be able to have a very effective, functional home. That sounds super boring, but for someone as disorganized as me, I am really looking forward to not being a crazily scattered lunatic. (We’ll see how that goes.) A house is going to be a lot of responsibility in terms of keeping it clean and organized, and I don’t know if you know this about me, but I am not the Queen of Motivation when it comes to housework.

All of this sounds ridiculous to be thinking about, but Paul and I have only ever lived in apartments. We’re going to have a lot more space, and I want to use it well. If any of you are super-organizers, I’d love to hear any spectacular tips you’ve got stored up in yo’ brains.

I’ve also got a new plan of attack forming in my brain for decorating. If you’ve been reading for awhile, you know that I am decoratively deficient. For some reason, I always buy a group of stuff all at once, try to make it look the way it does in my head, get disappointed, and give up. This usually results in 23 spray-painted picture frames sitting in various “I-swear-I’m-going-to-finish-it” places around the house. This time, I’m going to be a collector. Going for a general theme doesn’t seem to work, so I think it’s time to just find stuff I like as I go along and see where it will look good.

Thoughts? Is that a terrible idea? Or . . . is it brilliant?

Do you guys have any moving-in tips for us? Anything to help keep us organized and sane would be ideal. 🙂

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be jumping up and down repeatedly while spinning in circlesand singing something peppy from the 80’s. Let’s all hope I don’t puke.

Who am I kidding? I’m so happy right now, I’d probably just grab a mop and make up a catchy jingle about cleaning up puke.

Highlights.

Sometimes there isn’t much to talk about.

Sometimes you’re just doing what you do.

Sometimes you’ve just got to look at some pictures.
